How to Use vidIQ — Beginners Tutorial With Real Examples

vidIQ is the research pass we run before scripting a launch video. Not a growth-hack tool, not an autopilot for your channel — a way to check what is already working on YouTube so we are not producing into a vacuum. This is the beginner version: what it is, how to set it up, and the four screens we actually open, with a real example of how the numbers change a decision.

It sits in the stack we run on as a demand check, right next to the raw trend scraping we do with Apify. One tells us what is searched. The other tells us what already ranks for it.

What vidIQ is

Two pieces. A browser extension that overlays stats on YouTube itself — search results, video pages, competitor channels — and a dashboard with keyword tools and tracking. The extension is where most of the day-to-day happens. You are on YouTube already; vidIQ just annotates what you are looking at.

Setup, start to finish

Three steps, about five minutes:

The free plan covers all of this. You do not need to pay to do research, which is the only thing we use it for.

The free plan is enough for the entire research workflow below.

The four screens we actually open

vidIQ has a lot of features. We ignore most of them. Here are the four that change what we make.

1. Keyword research

Type a topic into the Keywords tool and read two numbers: search volume (how much people want it) and competition (how hard it is to rank). The combination you want is real volume with low competition. High volume and high competition means the giants already own it. Low volume anything means do not bother.

2. The search overlay

Search your topic on YouTube with the extension on. Under each result you get the video's stats and, next to the search box, an overall score for the phrase. This is where you sanity-check the keyword tool against reality: if the top results are all huge channels from years ago, the phrase is spoken for no matter what the score says.

3. Competitors

Open a channel making videos in your lane and vidIQ shows its recent uploads with views and engagement. You are looking for their outliers — the videos that did far better than that channel's baseline. An outlier is a topic the audience voted for. That is a stronger signal than any keyword score.

4. Your own numbers

Once you have posted, vidIQ tracks your videos the same way. The point is not dashboard vanity. It is closing the loop: seeing which of your bets actually landed and feeding that back into the next round of research.

A real example

Say we are deciding what to make about a tool we use. We type the obvious phrase into the keyword tool. It comes back high volume, high competition. On its own that is a maybe. So we run the search overlay: the entire first page is million-subscriber channels. Verdict: skip the head term.

Then we narrow it. A more specific, honest phrasing — the actual question a beginner types — reads lower volume but much lower competition, and the search page is a mix of small channels and a couple of stale uploads. That is the gap. We make the specific one. The keyword tool alone would have talked us into the wrong video; reading it against the live search page is what corrected it. That is the whole method: never trust a single number.

Pricing, an honest take

The free plan gives you the extension, the overlay, and enough keyword and competitor data to do everything above. That is the plan we use for research. Paid tiers add more daily searches, deeper competitor tracking, AI title and thumbnail helpers, and coaching-style features aimed at people trying to grow a channel from the tool itself.

Honest take: if you want vidIQ to grow your channel for you, you are buying the wrong promise, and the paid tiers will feel thin. If you want it as a demand check before you spend real time producing, the free plan is enough and the upgrade is optional. We have never needed more than the research features. Check their pricing page for current tiers.

Verdict

vidIQ earns its place by making one question fast to answer: is anyone actually looking for this, and can I win it? Read volume and competition together, check them against the live search page, and let a competitor's outliers break the tie. Do that before you script, not after you post. When the research says go, we take it into production — script, voiceover with ElevenLabs, and the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Is vidIQ free?

Yes, there is a free plan, and it covers the extension, the search overlay, and enough keyword and competitor data to do real research. Paid tiers add volume and growth features you do not need just to check demand.

vidIQ vs TubeBuddy, which one?

They overlap heavily; both are research overlays for YouTube. We use vidIQ because the keyword and competitor views match how we work. Pick one, learn it well, and do not pay for both.

Do I need vidIQ to grow on YouTube?

No. It does not grow anything for you. It tells you what is worth making before you spend the time. The growth still comes from the video itself.

Is the vidIQ score accurate?

Treat it as a starting point, not a verdict. The scores are directional. Always check them against the live search results, where a page full of giant channels overrides any friendly-looking number.
